02What to do

If it’s a friend

  1. 1If they’re in danger right now, call 911. Stay with them, in person or on the phone, until help comes.
  2. 2Ask them straight: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Asking won’t put the idea there. It tells them you’ll listen.
  3. 3Listen. Let them say it. You don’t need the right words, and you don’t have to fix it.
  4. 4Call or text 988 together, any hour. If they won’t, call or text 988 yourself. Either way, stay with them.
  5. 5Don’t keep it a secret, even if they ask you to. Tell an adult right away: a parent, a school counselor, Amy.

“There is nothing wrong with calling help. That’s not breaking trust. That’s love keeping its promise.”

Amy Mays

If it’s you

  1. 1Call or text 988, any hour. It’s free and confidential, and you don’t have to be sure it’s bad enough.
  2. 2Tell one person you trust today: a friend, a parent, a counselor, Amy.
  3. 3If you can’t keep yourself safe right now, call 911.

“Let the thought be a signal, not an instruction: something is happening in me, and it needs attention, and it deserves attention.”
